The Rural Development Administration (RDA) of South Korea is taking steps to enhance the cultivation and industrial competitiveness of Korean persimmons by introducing new varieties with superior taste, texture, and disease resistance. The RDA's focus is to diversify the current dominance of the 'Buyu' variety, which accounts for 79% of the market, mostly imported from Japan. Two notable new varieties, 'Gampung' and 'Bonghwang', have been developed, boasting unique characteristics such as larger fruit size, crunchy and soft flesh, and extended shelf life. The RDA is actively promoting these new varieties through a new variety utilization project and by establishing specialized cultivation complexes, with the goal of increasing farm income and expanding domestic production.
