China imports approximately 2 million tons of alfalfa annually, with a projected annual consumption growth of 7-8%. The primary suppliers have been the USA and Spain, but Russia is emerging as a potential new source due to its logistical advantages, including proximity to China. Sergei Gontar, the General Director of the Association of Hay and Feed Exporters, has pointed out the benefits for Chinese dairy farms in sourcing alfalfa from regions closer to the PRC border, indicating a significant opportunity for Russian alfalfa exports to the Chinese market.
