The African swine fever (ASF) epidemic in Sardinia, which had persisted since 1978, has been successfully eradicated through a rigorous program involving national and international experts. Meanwhile, Sweden managed to quickly control an ASF outbreak in wild boar in the Västmanland region last year, with no new cases reported since September. EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, commended the efforts in both Sardinia and Sweden but highlighted that ASF continues to pose a significant challenge in many parts of the EU, necessitating ongoing scientific efforts for its eradication and control.
