The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Turkey has initiated vaccination studies against the SAT-2 serotype foot-and-mouth disease, following its outbreak in Iraq and later in some regions of Turkey. The ministry has developed a vaccine and is administering it to approximately 155 thousand cattle across the province of Edirne, with the aim of preventing disease transmission. The vaccine was developed in a week and sent to provincial directorates across the country. Breeders in Edirne have expressed relief at the quick development and distribution of the vaccine, but have also raised concerns about its availability and the impact of the disease and the restrictions it has imposed on animal mobility and markets.
