Saudi Arabia is pursuing a comprehensive initiative to emerge as a leading producer of saffron, the world's most expensive spice. This project, spearheaded by the National Centre for Research and Development of Sustainable Agriculture, aims to cultivate saffron across four regions: Riyadh, Qassim, Tabuk, and Al Baha. The effort seeks to improve various production factors, including planting times, fertilizers, and plant densities, as well as explore alternative farming techniques. This undertaking is inspired by Saudi Arabia's high saffron consumption and the economic opportunities it presents, given the country's significant saffron imports in 2020. The initiative is part of a larger strategy to diversify agriculture and achieve self-sufficiency, facing competition from dominant producers like Iran.
