Share of organic agriculture in Belgium twice as high as in the Netherlands

The Dutch organic agricultural area will have increased to 76,375 ha in 2021, approximately 3.5 percent of the total area. In Belgium, the organic agricultural area amounted to 102,413 ha. That is approximately 7.3 percent of the total area. This means that the share of organic agricultural land in Belgium is more than twice as large as in the Netherlands. The Dutch organic agricultural area has increased by 72 percent since 2012. The Belgian organic agricultural area increased by 59 percent in the same period. This is evident from figures from Eurostat, the European statistical office. Mainly permanent grassland The largest part of the Dutch and Belgian organic agricultural area consists of permanent grassland. In 2020 this was 41,541 of the 71,607 ha in the Netherlands and 61,644 of the 99,072 ha in Belgium. Figures for 2021 are not yet available.
