Due to the bird flu outbreaks, 24 countries that are not members of the European Union (third countries) closed their borders to Belgian poultry meat.
Since March 2021, no new hot spots have been discovered at commercial poultry farms. As a result, the Food Agency can submit a self-declaration to the World Organization for Animal Health, as a result of which Belgium regained avian flu status on 16 August 2021.
Eighteen countries have still closed their borders to Belgian poultry meat. These are South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Korea, Cuba, Russia, the Philippines, Mexico, Ukraine, Taiwan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Suriname, Tunisia, Oman and Kuwait.
