The Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (Minister Oh Yoo-kyung) announced that the Joint External Evaluation (JEE) conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) on South Korea's food safety management system resulted in the highest score of 5 points in the 'Food Safety' category. The WHO Joint External Evaluation team visited South Korea from August 25 to 29 last year to evaluate 19 areas including 'Food Safety' and published the final report, which acknowledges sustainable crisis response capabilities, on the WHO official website. The evaluation in the food safety sector, which received consecutive top scores following the 2017 evaluation (1st), signifies that South Korea's safety management capabilities for the entire food supply chain from production to consumption are recognized as the world's highest standard. The food safety sector was evaluated on 2 indicators (22 items), and notably, among the 22 countries evaluated after 2024, only South Korea and the United States received 5 points for both indicators. The evaluation team gave high scores for the efficient food safety management cooperation system among related ministries and local governments centered around the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, real-time monitoring and rapid response systems such as the food poisoning reporting and management system and the integrated food safety information network, continuous education and training, communication systems for food safety such as the 'Food Safety Nation', and vulnerable group consideration policies such as the display of sign language videos through Food QR, among others. Furthermore, the evaluation team recommended that "South Korea's food safety management system, based on a solid legal and institutional foundation and supplemented by digital infrastructure, is setting a global example" and "will also contribute to strengthening food safety capabilities in countries around the world in the future." The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety plans to continue to faithfully implement the recommendations of the evaluation team and to lead international cooperation and regulatory harmonization to continuously strengthen the global status of South Korea's food safety management system.
