The Government has announced that it is appealing to the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) the ruling that dismissed several appeals filed by Spain and the fishing sector against the designation of fishing ban zones in the Atlantic by the European Commission (EC). After the ruling from last June, issued by the EU General Court, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has confirmed in statements to Efeagro that Spain is filing an appeal that is "limited to the legal aspects" of that ruling. The ruling by the Community General Court sided with the European Commission and endorsed the 2022 regulations, which designated areas to be protected in Spain and other countries, considering that there are, or are likely to be, vulnerable marine ecosystems, which affected hake catches.
