Spain's sunflower production for 2024 is expected to remain steady at around 767,000 hectares, with the majority of the planting in Castilla y León, Andalusia, and Castilla-La Mancha. However, the Spanish Sunflower Association (AEG) has noted lower than expected yields due to insufficient winter rainfall and a lack of reserve water in the soil. The global sunflower market is also experiencing price hikes due to reduced production in key countries like the United States, Romania, Hungary, and France, caused by severe climatic instability and competition from other vegetable oils and petroleum. In Spain, normal sunflower prices range from 430 to 475 euros per tonne, while high oleic sunflower prices range from 470 to 575 euros per tonne, but these are lower than French prices. The AEG anticipates a temporary stabilization in sunflower prices, but a continued increase as other oils become more expensive.
