Spain will defend trawling against the Brussels plan to eliminate it from protected areas by 2030

BRUSSELS, March 17 (EUROPA PRESS) - The Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the European Union (EU) will address in their meeting on Monday the plans of the European Commission to gradually eliminate trawling from all marine protected areas of the EU by 2030, compared to what Spain defends that the sustainability of the seas and oceans is "perfectly compatible" with the profitability of the fishing activity. This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, during the plenary session of the Senate on March 7, an argument that has already advanced and will be used again on Monday to prevent the sector from being "demonized". Planas also expressed the need to act with caution when regulating trawling, a sector that has 805 vessels in the national fishing ground as a whole -a little less than 10% of the Spanish fleet as a whole-, whose activity it is already subject to restrictions in certain pelagic or semi-pelagic zones.
