Oats as a food are booming. From 2008 to 2018, the amount of oats processed into oat flakes, oat bran or other products in German oat mills increased by 70% to around 500,000 tons. In the same period, however, the area under cultivation in Germany fell by 22% and the oat harvest by 27%. The needs of the food industry cannot be covered by domestic production, which is why oats are imported every year - mainly from Scandinavia. In 2018 alone, 557,000 tons of oats were imported to Germany. This raises the question of why Germany's farmers do not want to participate in the oat boom. Especially since oats also bring advantages in the field. The recovery fruit can expand crop rotations and is cultivated less intensively than, for example, wheat. Added to this is its good pre-crop value. Two oat processing companies, Rubin-Mühle and Brüggen, were represented at the oat forum organized by the "Oats, the All-Grain" initiative.
