Stakeholders in Tanzania's sunflower industry have called on the government to take steps to boost sunflower grain production and reduce the country's reliance on imported edible oil. Proposed measures include strengthening contract farming, reducing taxes for processors, improving produce and product quality, and lowering tariffs for basic and improved certified seeds. The Agricultural Council of Tanzania (ACT) and other partners convened a meeting to address the issue, as Tanzania's domestic edible oil supply is only 205,000MT/annum, while the demand is 570,000MT/annum, leading to an annual importation of 365,000MT. The government is also taking steps to increase the production of quality sunflower seeds and encourage the cultivation of sunflower on idle land.
