The European Commission has published Regulation 2022/853 to implement stricter import requirements for sopropo (Balsam pear) from Honduras, Mexico, and Thailand to prevent the pest Thrips palmi from entering Europe. The regulation requires sopropo to be imported only from pest-free areas or fully protected cultivation sites. It can also be imported from sites with specific cultivation, processing, and inspection measures. However, these requirements will not apply to sopropo imports from Sri Lanka, as the current measures are deemed sufficient.
