In recent months, the Indian government regulatory panel has given the green light for field trials of several new GM crops. However, there are still fears that activism against this technology could derail the trials. After mustard, India is poised to start testing two more genetically modified (GM) food crops, bananas and potatoes, possibly ushering in a new era of biotech-enhanced crops. In recent months, the Genetic Engineering Evaluation Committee (GEAC), the central government panel that oversees and authorizes GM crop activity, has given the green light for field trials of several transgenic crops, which also include rubber and new varieties of cotton. This comes after nearly two decades of slow progress in the area since GM cotton was approved in 2002.
