Hungary's pond farms produce 77-78 percent of the carp and a smaller quantity of other fish species, which are available in the market through retailers, wholesalers, and fishing. About 20-25 percent of these fish are exported, and the rest is consumed locally or released into natural waters. Additionally, around 3,500 tons of African catfish, trout, and perch are farmed in thermal waters using intensive systems. In 2020, the fish farming sector generated approximately HUF 16 billion in sales. A-HAL is promoting the consumption of domestic fish through the Fish Friday campaign and has noted that an unexpected release of 1,200 tons of fish into public waters due to export restrictions during the spring pandemic led to an increase in fishing tourism.
