Over the past 30 years, Sweden has seen a dramatic decrease in dairy farming, with a 93% drop in total production. Despite this, the average herd size has grown, and the average milk yield per cow has nearly doubled. However, the number of dairy cows in Sweden has only decreased by 55%, from 665,189 in 1982 to 296,543 in 2022. This decline has accelerated in the last decade, with about 44% of farms ceasing production and a further decrease of 50,000 dairy cows.
