The Tanzania Agricultural Seed Agency (ASA) is expressing dissatisfaction with the failure of Singida Region authorities to distribute over 100 tonnes of subsidised sunflower seedlings to farmers. The seeds, which cost over 1.79 billion/-, were distributed to the councils at a subsidised price, but it has been reported that more than 100 metric tonnes has not been distributed to the intended growers. ASA's CEO, Dr Sophia Kashenge, is demanding compensation for the misused seeds and has criticized the region's poor use of vital seeds that could have helped farmers in other regions. The region, the country's leading producer of sunflower, is implementing a strategy to increase edible oil production to solve the country's edible oil production shortage.
