The Thai government has announced the opening of its market for Spanish grapes and pears, following extensive cooperation with Spain. This decision comes after a ban imposed in 2010 for phytosanitary reasons. The Spanish government provided technical information assuring the food safety of the fruit, and the results of a recent verification visit were satisfactory. The import protocol is now being processed, and the exact start date is yet to be confirmed. This development is expected to provide a new market for Spanish fruit, competing with US grapes and potentially facilitating cherry exports from Spain. This is part of Spain's strategy to expand grape exports outside the EU and UK, and to be the second country to perform cold treatment on cherries in the world, a practice currently only allowed in Australia.
