The Community of Madrid has launched a regulatory process that marks a turning point for the regional oil sector: a draft decree that implements a mandatory traceability system for olives from the moment they are harvested until they enter the oil mill or storage center. The initiative is born in a context of revaluation of olive oil, a situation that, in addition to generating commercial opportunities, has increased thefts in farms, putting the profitability of farmers at risk and forcing the reinforcement of control mechanisms. The future decree will require the owners of olive farms to register in the Agricultural Holdings Information System (SIEX) and to rigorously record the movements of olives in and out of the farms. This requirement arises as a method to guarantee the complete traceability of the fruit and, if necessary, to identify without error the origin of any load involved in an incident or suspicion of irregularity.
