The European Commission approved this Friday a new Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) from Spain: the Pedroso Walnut, produced in the autonomous community of La Rioja, which will be added to the list of 1,606 already protected agricultural products. As explained by the community executive, the Pedroso Walnut owes its particular quality and characteristics to the region in which it is produced, stored and packaged, due to natural and human factors.
Seed selection, optimum cultivation practices, harvesting at the right time, natural drying, and storage of nuts under proper conditions are technologies that have been developed and passed down over the years, eventually becoming another important factor that allows obtaining good quality fruits and preserving all its characteristics. In addition to the natural drying method, the antioxidant capacity of the Pedroso Walnut is superior to that of other nuts, which gives it great antioxidant stability and allows longer conservation (more than a year in perfect conditions) at the same time. ...
