The grapevine flavescence dorée pathogen has been identified in the Harkány area of the Villány Wine Region, as reported by the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih). The pest is already present in 12 counties and 15 wine regions, posing a serious threat to Hungarian grape cultivation. Several white and blue grape varieties prevalent in the Villány Wine Region are particularly susceptible to the phytoplasma disease, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Cabernet sauvignon, and Pinot noir. According to Nébih, rapid and effective defense is crucial due to the disease's quarantine classification. Combating the American grape leafhopper that spreads the phytoplasma remains key.
