Denmark has seen a 3% increase in its pig population, reaching 13.2 million as of April 1, due to an increase in the breeding herd and a rise in the number of gilts for breeding. This contrasts with the declining number of breeding pigs in Germany and the Netherlands. The slaughter of pigs in Denmark has also increased by 10% compared to the previous year. The number of young pigs has also risen by 2%. The reference price of pigs in Denmark has also increased from EUR 143 to almost EUR 175 per 100 kg due to strong demand for Danish pork, aided by access to the Chinese market and limited supplies to other European countries.
