The Philippine Bureau of Fish and Aquatic Resources has accused Chinese and Vietnamese fishermen of using cyanide, an illegal practice, to fish in Scarborough Shoal, causing significant damage to coral and marine resources. The damage is yet to be assessed but is estimated to be over 1 billion pesos (approximately S$24 million). Additionally, the Philippine Coast Guard has accused Chinese ships of taking 'dangerous' actions to prevent Philippine ships from delivering supplies to Filipino fishermen and repositioning floating barriers in the disputed waters.
