The Region of Murcia in Spain has seen a 13.3% decrease in bluefin tuna production in 2021, with a total of 4,505 tons valued at over 84.74 million euros. Despite this decline, the region remains the leading producer of bluefin tuna in the country and is one of the most active areas in Spain in aquaculture per kilometer of coastline. Approximately 84% of the region's bluefin tuna production is exported to countries such as the United States, China, Korea, and Japan. Aquaculture in the region is considered sustainable and necessary by the Minister for Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment, Antonio Luengo, and the production guide presented by the COEC employers' association and Ricardo Fuentes company was financed by the Local Action Group for Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Region of Murcia and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
