Russian fisheries have seen a significant increase in catch, with the total haul of ivasi sardines, mackerel, and saury reaching 264.9 thousand tons as of October 25, 2020, a rise of 133 thousand tons from 2019. The majority of this catch was Iwashi sardine, with 237.8 thousand tons. The fishing activities were concentrated in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Russia, with 249.8 thousand tons caught, and smaller amounts in the open sea and the EEZ of Japan. The increase in catch is attributed to 59 fishing vessels of the Russian Federation that were actively fishing for pelagic fish species from October 19 to 25, 2020.
