Russia's agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, has reported an unfavorable but controlled situation with African swine fever (ASF) in the country. In 2022, 141 ASF outbreaks were reported, a decrease from 2021, with the majority affecting domestic pig populations. The decline is attributed to a legislative ban on feeding pigs food waste, which was implemented due to illegal sales of meat products and food waste in 2021. Measures to combat the disease include actions against illegal sales and the monitoring of social networks and online trading platforms. Despite these efforts, concerns remain due to the adaptation of the virus to wild boars, ineffective vaccines, and the activities of unscrupulous entrepreneurs, which could lead to the spread of ASF to previously disease-free areas.
