French beef production is projected to decline for the third year in a row in 2023, according to the Institut de L'Elevage IDELE. This decrease is attributed to a reduction in dairy cattle herds and breeders over the past six and a half years, leading to a limited supply of cattle. Despite stable consumption, there will be a rebound in imports due to the decrease in production. Weaned animal exports are also expected to decline, resulting in fewer carcasses for slaughter. The total weight of slaughter cattle is predicted to fall to 1.337 million carcass equivalent tonnes in 2023, marking a 1.6% decrease from 2022.
