Karla Cordero, also known as "The Queen of Rice,” led the implementation of the Rice Intensification System (SRI) in Chile, a method now benefiting over 10 million producers across 54 countries. Originally from Africa, the SRI method has been adapted for temperate climates like Chile, aiming to increase sustainable and efficient rice production. The LAC More Productive and Sustainable Rice project, showcased at an annual workshop, has seen success in Argentina and Panama, with fewer resources leading to higher yields. Training and education efforts have reached over 300 producers in Panama and 700 in Chile, with plans to expand further. Cordero's work is seen as a significant opportunity for Latin America to advance in science, technology, and innovation within agriculture.
