Iran spends approximately $550 million annually on importing tropical fruits such as bananas, coconuts, mangos, and pineapples, with bananas accounting for 450 million dollars of the total import cost. In an effort to reduce reliance on imports, the Iranian government has introduced the Seventh Five-Year Development Plan, which aims to cultivate tropical fruits in the Makran Coast region, a semi-desert coastal strip along the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman, using advanced cultivation technologies and water desalination systems. If successful, Iran could meet half of its domestic tropical fruit demand by 2028. The plan also includes expanding banana plantations in Sistan-Baluchestan province by 2,000 hectares in collaboration with the private sector, using modern technology to enhance yield and quality.
