South Korea's coastal fishery production has seen a significant decrease, dropping by 11.6% to 841,000 tons, marking the third lowest figure since 1970. This decline is attributed to poor fish school formations and reduced resource stocks due to high water temperatures. Additionally, there was a 4.3% decrease in the production value of coastal fisheries, amounting to KRW 4.1763 trillion. Despite these challenges, the total fisheries production in 2024 is expected to reach 3.61 million tons, with a value of KRW 10.918 trillion, marking the first time it has exceeded 10 trillion won. This increase is primarily due to a significant rise in deep-sea fisheries and sponge aquaculture, despite a decrease in coastal and inland fisheries.
