The Ministry of Agriculture in Hungary has added perch and carp from Lake Balaton under EU protection under the name 'Balaton fish'. This means that these fish can only be called Balaton fish if they are farmed in accordance with the product specification set out in the Geographical Indications Program and grown in the Balaton catchment area. The program aims to ensure the quality and authenticity of these fish, with carp being known for its compact and elastic flesh, and perch for its snow-white, lean, and tasty flesh.
