Bird flu has been discovered at two poultry farms in Hierden, Gelderland, leading to the culling of around 115,000 animals. The outbreak is part of the worst European bird flu outbreak ever since the disease was first detected in the Netherlands in October of the previous year. The disease has spread to other European countries, resulting in the mandatory confinement of commerially kept birds and the unavailability of free-range eggs in supermarkets, contributing to a significant increase in egg prices.
