The UK's Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced emergency measures to safeguard pig farmers and the industry from an African swine fever (ASF) outbreak. These measures include a ban on personal imports of pork and pork products from the European Economic Area (EEA), the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Switzerland, effective September 27, except for products packaged to EU commercial standards and weighing no more than 2kg. ASF poses no risk to human health but could significantly impact the UK's £8 billion pig industry and its annual pork and pork product exports worth £600 million. Defra is also investing £3.1 million to Dover Port Health Authority for 2024/25 to combat illegal meat imports and prevent ASF entry into Great Britain.
