The entire territory corresponds, like the Italian one, to the temperate climatic zone but being in the opposite hemisphere. Therefore, the sowing of rice takes place between the end of September and the beginning of November and the harvest begins in March. The Uruguayan territory is mainly characterized by natural pastures (70%), with soils often having a thin active layer which makes them unsuitable for deep tillage. The remainder is dedicated to arable land (10–15%), forest (5%) and forage (10–15%). Rice is always grown in rotation, with a monoculture period which, by law, must be a maximum of 3 years.
