A USDA report has forecasted a significant decrease in the production of peaches and nectarines in Europe for the 2020/21 season, with a projected 15% drop to 3.4 million tonnes due to adverse weather conditions and a reduction in planted areas. The total planted area for these fruits is anticipated to decrease to 216,550 hectares. The cherry production is also expected to decline by about 5-7%, adding up to 702,700 tonnes. These decreases could lead to a more balanced market and higher prices. The COVID-19 pandemic has not significantly impacted the EU stone fruit sector, and there has been an increase in the consumption of fruit and vegetables in the EU during the quarantine. As a result of the low internal production, it is expected that EU stone fruit imports will rise, with a majority of imports coming from Chile, South Africa, and Morocco.
