President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reduced the value added tax (VAT) on basic food products in Turkey from 8 percent to 1 percent. The reduction applies to a wide range of products including legumes, meats, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, canned goods, and baby food. Trade Minister Mehmet Muş warned that markets would be closely monitored to ensure they pass on the VAT reduction to consumers, and threatened heavy sanctions for non-compliance.
