Vietnam has seen a rise in chicken consumption but local poultry farmers are struggling due to increased costs, land shortage, and competition from smuggled poultry. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is working to prevent smuggling and disease infection. In 2020, Vietnam had a chicken population of 498 million, which is expected to grow to 555 million in 2023. The country consumed an average of 17.8 kg per person in 2021, which rose to 18.3 kg in 2022. Vietnam imported 178,000 tonnes of chicken meat in 2022, valued at US$237 million, but only exported 1,000 tonnes, valued at US$2.2 million.
