Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the suspension of city-to-city trade in China, Myanmar farmers have faced challenges in exporting cucumbers to Hubei Province. This has led to a decrease in cucumber planting and an imbalance in the supply and demand, resulting in soaring cucumber prices. In response, farmers have shifted their focus to watermelon cultivation, experiencing a surge in demand and prices, with watermelon selling for up to 7,200 yuan per ton, more than double the previous price. Despite these challenges, limited transportation and reduced truck exports have led to a further increase in watermelon prices. Farmers who planted less land this year due to COVID-19 concerns have missed out on the higher prices.
