The first Burmese watermelon export was made to Dubai in December 2020 by Zaw Min, who selected the quality of the fruit and paid a reduced price to the local farmers. The export price was 16 lakh kyats per ton, leaving the exporters unprofitable due to packaging and shipping costs. The Burmese watermelon market in Dubai is currently dominated by Brazil, India, Malaysia, and more than 60 acres are planted for export in the coming season. Myanmar, which has over 50,000 acres of watermelon plantations, exported 66,339 tonnes of watermelon in the last fiscal year, earning US $ 53.791 million.
