Hungary: Last year fewer animals were slaughtered in slaughterhouses than the year before

Hungarian slaughterhouses slaughtered 97.9 thousand cattle in 2022, 10.4 percent less than the previous year, 4 million 532 thousand pigs, which is a 6.9 percent decrease, and 207.8 million poultry, which is 11 percent less from 2021 - according to the summary of the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI). The total live weight of slaughtered poultry was 634.7 thousand tons, and its cut weight (cleaned, broken down weight) was 479.9 thousand tons in 2022. The majority of poultry (84 percent) was chicken, of which 175.1 million were slaughtered, 5.8 percent less than the previous year. In the poultry group, goose and duck slaughter fell significantly, by 35 and 37 percent, respectively, and turkey slaughter decreased by 10 percent compared to 2021. The total live weight of the 4.532 million pigs slaughtered in Hungarian slaughterhouses last year was 532,000 tons, and their carcass weight was 428,000 tons, both figures were more than 7 percent less than the previous year.
