In December 2023, Russia saw a significant decline in wine imports from traditional European suppliers like Spain, France, and Italy, with reductions of 59%, 58%, and 38% respectively, due to increased duties on wines from countries Russia considers unfriendly. This policy change, enacted in August 2023, has led to a noticeable decrease in imports from these nations over the year. In contrast, Russia has increased its wine imports from BRICS nations and other countries such as China, Brazil, and Turkey, with South Africa emerging as a leading exporter to Russia. Additionally, Russia's domestic wine production has experienced substantial growth, with a 25.4% increase in still wines and a 26.5% increase in sparkling wines in the first quarter of the year, indicating a move towards self-sufficiency in wine production and a diversification of its import sources.
