Portugal has exceptional soil and climatic conditions for the production of peaches with high quality and with the perfect combination of sugars and acidity, together with the aroma and texture.
The cultivated area is approximately 4,000 ha with an annual production of around 47,000 MT. Several varieties of peaches are produced in Portugal, which can be grouped into 3 different types: yellow-fleshed peaches, white-fleshed peaches, and nectarines.
Except for the United States, Peaches are usually hand-picked and packaged into baskets of 6-7kg After harvesting, the products are treated with water and wax to improve their appearance and avoid deterioration during the distribution process. Packaging of these peaches can vary from sizes of 2Kg baskets to 10Kg. However, they must not be stored in dense storage since it is highly perishable product.
