In W31 in the mango landscape, the Indian government has reported a 12.7% increase in mango production over the past decade, from over 184 thousand metric tons (mt) in 2023/24 to over 207 thousand mt in 2022/23, according to the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. India is the largest producer of mangoes - along with guavas and mangosteens - contributing approximately 44% of global production in the 2020/21 season.
Furthermore, Indian mango production and quality have been adversely impacted in seven mango-producing states in 2023 due to unseasonal rains, hailstorms, and pest infestations, according to the Agriculture Minister. Adverse weather conditions have led to damaged crops, reduced production, and decreased fruit quality in various regions, including Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The official data for mango production in the agricultural year 2023/24 will be available in the First Advance Estimates, expected in Jan-24.
The Commerce Department of Thailand is actively implementing fruit management measures to boost agricultural trade in 2023. They have introduced green mangoes from Lamphun Province, distributing them through local department stores in the North and Northeast regions. On the other hand, mango exports from Bangladesh have significantly increased, with 1.75 thousand mt exported last year. In 2023, mangoes have been exported to 34 countries, compared to 28 countries in 2022, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Major export destinations include the UK, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Singapore, Switzerland, Germany, France, Sweden, Kuwait, and Canada. Despite producing around 25 thousand mt of mangoes annually, the export volume remains low due to non-compliance with international standards. To address this, the Ministry of Agriculture has initiated a project to increase the production of exportable mangoes, offering support to farmers in adopting good agricultural practices. This effort has resulted in a significant increase in mango exports compared to previous years.
Lastly, the National Mango Board (NMB) forecasts a nearly 3% rise in weekly mango imports to the United States (US), primarily driven by robust supplies from Mexico. Mexican mangoes dominate the US market from February through September, with Brazil's imports starting in August and other countries like Central America, Ecuador, Peru, Haiti, Australia, Jamaica, and Colombia contributing to year-round availability. According to the NMB's crop report, the Kent variety leads shipments with a 56% share, followed by Ataulfo at 22.5% and Tommy Atkins at 19%. Mexico is the leading exporter of mangoes to the US, with over 4 million 8.8lb boxes shipped. During W31, mango volumes to the US increased by 17.72%, reaching 3.75 million boxes, while average weekly prices decreased by 8.02% to USD 4.36/kg. The Mexican mango season, which began in January and will extend until October, peaked in W18, with a notable 50% increase in volume compared to the same period in 2022.
