In W32 in the pear landscape, European pear production is expected to reach about 1.7 million tons, a 12.9% year-on-year (YoY) decrease. This reduction in production is attributed to decreased yields experienced across multiple European countries. There was a 28% reduction in France, resulting in total production of 105 thousand tons. Italy experienced a sharper decrease of 63%, yielding 187 thousand tons, while the Netherlands saw a more modest drop of 3.3%, with their production totaling 341 thousand tons. However, Belgium and Spain showed a positive rebound, with production surging by 19% to 412 thousand tons and 25% to 296 thousand tons, respectively. Poland stood out with a remarkable increase, achieving a historical figure of 100 thousand tons.

In terms of pear varieties, notable decreases in comparison to 2022 include Abate Fetel, which experienced a sharp decline of 69% to reach 53 thousand tons; Ercolini dropped by 29% to 55 thousand tons; Guyot-Limonera witnessed a decrease of 21%, amounting to 42 thousand tons; Passacrasana faced a significant drop of 42%, resulting in 2 thousand tons; and William decreased by 36% to 154 thousand tons. On the other hand, there are optimistic projections for Conference, with an expected improvement of 8%, reaching 928 thousand tons, while Rocha is also expected to see a 4% increase, reaching 138 thousand tons.

India's pear production is expected to maintain a comparable output of 88 million tons, but pear quality may not meet optimal standards, and their size is diminished due to weather conditions. Lastly, Gokseong-gun, a Jeollanam-do-based cooperative in South Korea, has started exporting its Wonhwang pears, weighing 77 tons and valued at USD 312 thousand (KRW 420 million). With 25 member farms, the cooperative has secured certification as a specialized pear export hub. The pears have already gained a strong foothold in the United States, with South Korea exporting 410 tons in 2022. South Korea plans to begin exports to Australia and Thailand in the latter half of 2023. Gokseong-gun is driving export support initiatives, including logistical expenses, packaging materials, and buyer-oriented events, to enhance the competitiveness of their premium pears.
