Early Mango Bloom in Rajshahi Sparks Hope for Profitable 2024 Season for Bangladesh

Despite the optimal time for flower setting being a couple of weeks away in Bangladesh, some mango trees in the Rajshahi region have already started sprouting. Due to early blooming in the 2024 season, a mango grower in Charghat Upazila, with over 200 mango trees, anticipates a profitable yield from the diverse varieties cultivated this season. The deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) notes the annual early sprouting of mango flowers, which has already begun this year. Successful harvest depends on weather conditions, and with around 3.5 million mango trees across 23 thousand hectares (ha) in the region, a favorable climate could lead to abundant production in Rajshahi and Chapai Nawabganj. If the current sprouting process is not affected by any dense fog, farmers can carry out early harvest. Early blossoms yield sweet and mangoes.

Insufficient Brazilian Mango Volumes Unable to Offset Peruvian Shortage

The impact of El Niño on Peru's mango harvest has led to reduced volumes, particularly in the Kent variety. Low temperatures during spring caused a lack of flowering, significantly decreasing production in regions like Piura, Tambogrande, Motupe, and Casma. The current harvest is only 15 to 30% of the quantities in the previous 2023 season. With Brazil in low season, its production cannot compensate for the Peruvian shortage. N&K, a global fruit wholesaler and member of the French Kinobe group, notes a decline from 300 to 60 or 70 containers per week. This scarcity has driven up mango prices in European markets, with increasing demand from American and Asian countries.
