In W44 in the almond landscape, Chilean almond production is experiencing growth due to strong international demand, with a forecasted increase of 0.88% in the 2023/24 season, reaching 11.40 thousand tons. The export volume is predicted to rise by 0.60% year-on-year (YoY) to 8.30 thousand tons. The main export markets for Chilean almonds include Argentina, Russia, and Ecuador. The Chilean almond planting areas are expected to slightly increase by 0.52% in the upcoming season, reaching 9.45 thousand hectares (ha). The Chilean almond and walnut industries are experiencing growth driven by international demand, expansion of planting areas, and the popularity of high-quality varieties.

Almond and pistachio growers in California's San Joaquin Valley are urged to be vigilant about the Carpophilus beetle, a new pest recently discovered in orchards. The pest, which feeds directly on almond kernels, threatens both yield and quality. Carpophilus beetle populations have been confirmed in multiple counties, indicating it has become widespread in the region. The pest overwinters in remnant nuts from the previous year's harvest and can cause substantial damage. While control methods, including insecticides and biological control, remain unclear, crop sanitation is currently considered the most effective strategy. Research and extension activities are underway to address the issue.

Furthermore, the Northern Hemisphere's ongoing almond harvest has been associated with low yields and quality issues. In the United States (US), the almond harvest continues two weeks later than usual, causing concerns about crop quality and an increased risk of insect damage and fungal infections. While crop losses have influenced prices, they are forecasted to remain stable unless there's a substantial rise in export demand. In Spain, a smaller-than-expected crop prevents price declines, coupled with typical seasonal price patterns.

Lastly, the Spanish almond market shows some improvement but hasn't yet impacted prices, which remain lower compared to 2022. In various markets, almond prices exhibit fluctuations, ranging from USD 3.26 per kilogram (EUR 3.05/kg) for Commune almonds to USD 6.04/kg (EUR 5.65/kg) for Marcona almonds. Some varieties, particularly Marcona and Largueta, have experienced significant price decreases, with Marcona prices down by 32.44% year-on-year (YoY). On the other hand, almond production is forecasted to increase by 21.7% YoY, with Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Aragón being the leading almond-producing regions.
