In W45 in the strawberry landscape, the 2023 strawberry season has exhibited variability across global markets. An early surge in the autumn harvest led to later losses, increasing prices in the Netherlands. German markets are awaiting Greek strawberries, and in France, consumption has decreased as consumers become more mindful of natural growing seasons. Italy anticipates increased strawberry cultivation, while Spain faces a challenging season with a late start and replanting issues. North America experiences tight strawberry availability, with picking concluding in northern regions and increasing production in southern areas. Egypt expects higher demand due to adverse weather conditions in Morocco and Spain. The Moroccan strawberry area has decreased, and growers are exploring alternative crops. In North America, Florida is set to begin strawberry production later Nov-23, with high demand exceeding supply.

Mexico is the fourth larges strawberry producer, with a 3.4% market share. In 2021, it became the second-largest exporter, supplying 65.6% of the national volume in 2021. Researchers at the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural, and Livestock Research (INIFAP) highlighted the growth of berries in Mexico from 2000 to 2020. However, challenges related to soil health and pathogens impacting plantations have emerged. Crown rot in strawberries and Fusarium Oxysporum in blackberries pose significant threats, leading researchers to explore alternatives for phytosanitary management.

The Peruvian strawberry industry faced challenges in 2023 due to the Yacu cyclone and El Niño transition, leading to a reduced cultivation area of 3.50 thousand hectares (ha). Despite a delayed campaign, exports reached 17.60 million kilograms by Aug-23, generating USD 28.8 million in revenue. Peru competes with Mexico, while Egypt's growing presence in the United States (US) frozen strawberry market may impact Mexico's share. Challenges include the need for varietal replacement, improved research programs, and professionalization efforts. Prices have been lower compared to 2022, with an average price of USD 1.64/kg in Aug-23, prompting discussions on contract negotiations considering uncontrollable factors. Peru aims to reach 28 million kg by the end of 2023, emphasizing adaptation to market demands and competitiveness.

Lastly, adverse weather conditions, including the highest global temperatures in history and a delayed autumn temperature drop in China, have impacted strawberry farmers in Miaoli Dahu. The late planting, combined with recent hot weather, has led to the death of many seedlings, prompting farmers to replant. The abundant strawberry production is forecasted to face a delayed season by 1 to 2 weeks, with the peak season anticipated around mid-to-late Dec-23. Farmers are adjusting planting schedules based on climate conditions, and the strawberry season is likely to be held in mid-Dec-23 to avoid potential reputation damage due to ongoing planting activities. Disease control measures are in place, with a focus on preventing bacterial diseases such as angular leaf spot. However, a successful harvest depends on favorable weather conditions, including significant subsequent cooling and temperature variations between day and night to enhance fruit sugar content.
