Spain Asks Brussels to Resort Again to the WTO for the Tariff on Black Olives From the USA

Luis Planas, the minister of agriculture, fisheries, and food, announced on Monday that he would urge the European Commission to once more turn to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to reactivate the recognition panel on the situation of black olives so that the United States would remove the tariffs that the Trump administration had put in place since 2018 on imports of this Spanish-made good. The WTO sided with the Spanish black olive producers in its decision from last November and decided that a portion of the tariffs imposed by the US on the export of this product to the North American market since 2018 (more specifically, the 15% imposed by the alleged illegal aid to the sector) should be lifted.

Italian Olive Farmers Take Stock of Current Harvest, Look Ahead to Challenges

The majority of central and northern Italy saw a rise in olive oil production in the crop year 2022/23, while the south saw a decrease. Puglia, Sicilia, and Calabria, which typically make up a sizeable portion of Italy's production, were adversely affected by a number of weather-related problems as well as an "off-year" in the olive trees' natural alternate bearing cycle. Lack of rain has harmed olive trees all over the nation since the start of the phenological phases. Late frosts also affected some regions, which prevented flowering and fruit setting and produced several instances of fruit drop.

Despite the Drought, the Anticipation of a Promising Olive Harvest in Chile

The upcoming olive crop is anticipated with optimism by growers and producers all over Chile despite the ongoing drought that has affected a large portion of the fertile central valley of the country. The region's hydrological deficit grew in December, according to the nation's meteorological service. The majority of the country's olive trees are located in the central valley, which is now completely dry. Nevertheless, growers anticipate that the 2023 crop will surpass the 2022 harvest, which produced 21,000MT of olive oil, slightly less than the five-year rolling average. The majority of farmers expect that the harvest will start in the middle of April and last until June.
