In W25 in the honey landscape, the governments of Canada and Ontario are investing up to USD 10 million to support the grape growing and beekeeping sectors in offsetting the costs incurred due to grapevine and bee colony losses caused by extreme weather conditions and varroa mite damage in 2021/22. Additionally, eligible beekeepers will receive financial aid to cover up to 70% of the expenses associated with purchasing bee colonies to replace those affected during the specified period. According to researchers at York University, Canada's wild pollinators are declining and could face extinction without a national pollinator plan. Many species, including endangered ones like the rusty-patched bumblebee and American bumblebee, could face extinction. Wild pollinators are crucial for Canada's economy, food security, and ecosystems. Around 30 species, including eight bee species, are listed under Canada's Species at Risk Act.
Argentina, known as a major honey exporter, celebrated "Beekeeper's Day" on June 21. However, the industry is facing challenges due to its heavy reliance on exports and low international honey prices. Some countries are endorsing the export of adulterated honey, causing concerns. The EU reported that, in 2021/22, a significant proportion of imported honey did not meet the necessary standards. The highest absolute number of suspicious shipments originated from China (74%), although honey from Turkey had the highest relative proportion of suspicious samples (93%). Honey imported from the UK had an even higher suspicion rate (100%), probably because it was honey produced in other countries and then blended in the UK before being re-exported to the EU. This issue directly affects Argentine producers and exporters since the EU, the US, and Japan are major buyers of Argentine honey.
The US experienced the second-deadliest agricultural season for honey bees, with beekeepers losing 48% of their colonies between May 2022 and April 2023. Varroatosis, caused by the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, famine, and adverse weather conditions, were identified as the primary causes of colony deaths. Ukraine has become a strong competitor to the EU in honey exports since the lifting of customs restrictions, with significant exports to Belgium, Poland, and Germany. Lastly, in Portugal, drought has resulted in an 80% decline in honey production for the 2022/2023 season, and the survival of hives is at risk. Beekeepers must provide food and veterinary care, facing increased production costs, including fuel. Portugal has also experienced a significant loss of beehives, with the mortality rate expected to double in 2023.
